Meeting to Discuss Details of Affordable Housing

SAN ANGELO, TX - The City’s Neighborhood and Family Services Department announced that it will host a town hall meeting.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, at the City Council chambers at the McNease Convention Center, 501 Rio Concho Dr. The public is invited to hear a presentation from the developers and to ask questions about the two proposals being addressed.

The meeting with address two proposals for affordable housing complexes: one in the Fort Concho area, and another at Martin Luther King Dr. and 29th St.

The press release stated, “San Angelo Estates is a 48 to 60-unit apartment complex for senior citizens proposed by Four Corners Development. It would be located in the Fort Concho area east of Surber Drive, north of Baker Street and south of the Concho River.”

The two projects being addressed are competing for low-income housing tax credits awarded annually through the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs. In order to be more competitive with other projects across the state, the developers will seek letters of support from the City Council.

“Rents in the proposed complexes would range from 30 percent of the average median income in San Angelo (which would constitute low income for senior citizens) to market rates for a few units,” the press release added. “Thirty percent of the median income equals approximately $11,000 annually for a one-person household, or $12,600 for a two-person household. Current market rates are $487 for a one-bedroom apartment and $627 for two bedrooms.”

Tuesday, Nov. 22, at the City Council will once again hear a propose affordable housing complexes in the Fort Concho area, This site has been tried by the developer many times and has been defeated by residents who do not want another affordable housing in the same area where low-income and Senior citizens San Angeloans are being placed to live instead of the West Side of town where all the stores and food places are. Last time, city council did not grant a developer access to the East side of town and we all knew why --"we welcome low income to our town but not on my side of town". The Fort Concho area has several apartments already (low income) where police are constantly patrolling for drugs). Now why would the City want another apartment close to Fort Concho is amazing as is it not their "Pride and Joy". The proposed apartments will also be next to the Concho river. More trash can flow into the river. Why make San Angeloans esp. tourist fear coming to Fort Concho and the downtown area during the night. Low income apartments need to be all over San Angelo esp. on the West side in areas such as Bentwood, College Hills, the Bluffs, Districts 1, 5, and 6th. Why not where the new Wal-Marts are being located. Now the City council seems to have made up their mind and backing two sites. Before there were meeting to assess citizens views on the proposal before the City council decided their action. Now the decision no longer seems to be left to the residents who live in the area. Is it because the East side has a funeral home down the street?

While I have no problem with low income housing, it's greatly needed with the RIDICULOUSLY high property taxes here, I don't believe they belong in, "Bentwood, College Hills, The Bluffs...." I don't believe I should be punished with a lower property value because you want convenience. Maybe build all these damn Neighborhood Markets, or one of the too many Chik-fil-As in those other areas.
