SAN ANGELO, TX – In honor of Veteran’s Day, the Angelo State University Air Force ROTC Detachment 847 will be hosting a retreat ceremony followed by a candle lit vigil. The event will take place today, beginning at 3 pm.
The flag retreat ceremony will take place at the ASU flagpole, located in front of the Mayer Administration Building. Det. 847 commander Maj. Gary Glover, will be delivering the opening remarks. The next item on the itinerary will involve the dedication of two new memorials, which will begin the candlelight vigil.
One will honor all current and former ASU student veterans and the other commemorates all former ASU students who have died in military combat. The new memorials, made of brick with bronze plaques, will flank the original brick memorial at ASU. That memorial, along with the Memorial Oak Grove, commemorates the 29 former ASU students who gave their lives during World War II.
Burt Terrill, Vietnam veteran and former mayor of San Angelo, will the guest speaker for the candle light vigil. Terrill will be reading short biographies of the ASU alumni veterans. The ASU Friends of the Porter Henderson Library and West Texas Collection will be hosting a reception in the Mayer Administration Building after the 1st cadet reading. The vigil and readings will continue until midnight at the Memorial Oak Grove.
The public is invited to attend all the events.
