SAN ANGELO, TX - In observance of Veterans Day, most city offices in San Angelo will be closed Friday, Nov. 11.
Garbage collection and landfill operations will not be interrupted on this day.
Each year on Armistice Day, which marked the end of World War I, Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans.
The San Angelo Public Information Division advised that the Fairmount Cemetery, 1120 W. Avenue N, will host a Veterans Day celebration at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11. Hosted by the Friends of Fairmount Cemetery, Anthony Wilson stated, “The event will feature Fort Cocho’s artillery crew, a bagpiper and a keynote address from Goodfellow Air Force Base commander Col. Michael Downs.”
In preparation of the event, more than 1,400 American flags will be placed on the graves of the veterans buried at Fairmount. Wilson added that, “the cemetery is the final resting place for veterans from the Battle of San Jacinto to the Vietnam War. Several buffalo soldiers who served at Fort Concho are also buried at the designated Texas Historic Cemetery.”
On Nov. 11, self-guided tours will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Fort Concho Barracks 1 Visitor Center. Living history volunteers with the Fort will also participate in the Veterans Day parade downtown at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5.
City offices that will be closed for the holiday include:
- Station 618 and Santa Fe Crossing senior centers
- Southside and Carl Ray Johnson recreation centers
- McNease Convention Center
- San Angelo-Tom Green County Health Department
- Fairmount Cemetery’s business offices
