Adult Enrichment Center Closes Forever

San Angelo, TX – After nearly 30 years of serving the San Angelo community, the Adult Enrichment Center closes its doors forever effective today.

Established in 1986, the center has dedicated its time to provide elderly individuals and their families an alternative for daytime senior care. Those who attended the center were able to receive care and attention while their loved ones were able to maintain a normal working schedule.

The closing of the center means 35 families will be displaced and looking for an alternative in care. This may mean that more families will have to resort to placing their loved ones in long-term nursing homes, or in the case of a few clients, caregivers have to change work schedules to accommodate the new situation. One of the agency's clients has been there since 1992, and now will have to accommodate to a new schedule after so many years.

“It's devastating,” Donna, a nurse at the center, said. “All the families who depend on us will be loaded down.”

The downward spiral of the center began a couple of months ago when it lost the funding from United Way. According to one of the nurses on staff, Donna, the loss of funds and having the building struck by lightning all proved to be too much financial burden, and the center was unable to continue.

The daycare patients were not the only ones affected by the closing. Six employees will be jobless as of today; the center had previously eliminated positions in order to reduce cost. Six elderly companions who worked at the center for a small supplement were also affected.

The center is located at 6146 Appaloosa Trail, near Sam’s Club.
