Sealcoating City Streets to Begin Soon and will Last 3 Weeks

The City of San Angelo could begin its yearly program of street maintenance as soon as Monday, Aug. 22.

The sealcoating of selected streets throughout the city represents the second year of an eight-year cycle to maintain every city roadway in San Angelo.

The project’s start date will depend upon the contractor’s availability. Weather permitting, the work should be completed within three weeks. Motorists should avoid parking on affected streets until work is complete. Streets in the northwest Loop area, from the Houston Harte Expressway to the Concho River, in The Trails and in Bentwood Country Club will be treated. For maps of specific streets to be sealcoated, visit cosatx.us/streets.

Sealcoating is a preventative measure. It involves applying a thin layer of asphalt and rock to a street’s surface. That prevents moisture from seeping into the asphalt and damaging the roadway’s base. The process extends the life of a street’s surface.

Ronald R. Wagner & Co. of Kendalia, Texas, was awarded a $3.6 million contract to perform the sealcoating. That marks a $400,000 increase over what the City spent on sealcoating in 2015. Wagner also performed the work last year.

The contractor will also sealcoat three parking lots along the Red Arroyo Trail. The lots are at Unidad Park, the intersection of Milbrook Drive and College Hills Boulevard, and on Sul Ross Street.

The streets involved in the maintenance program were determined following an analysis and prioritization of street conditions by the City’s Engineering Services and the Street & Bridge divisions.

The City Council in January approved an $80 million, 10-year plan to rebuild San Angelo’s worst streets. The first project – reconstruction of MLK Drive – is scheduled to begin this fall. Resurfacing College Hills Boulevard should also begin in the fall. The first phase of a three-phase project to rebuild Bell Street will begin in the spring. The construction schedule is available at cosatx.us/streets.
