San Angelo Pan-American Golf Association Kicks Off Its 50 Year Celebration

San Angelo Pan-American Golf Association Day looks to award over $25,000 in scholarships to high school graduating seniors from San Angelo and the surrounding areas this Saturday, May 14.

Edward Montelong, tournament director for the P.A.G.A, said their goal is to award $25,000.00 in scholarships to graduating high school seniors from Central, Lake View, Texas Leadership Charter Academy, Cornerstone, Wall, Miles, and Grape Creek.

Montelong mentioned one of the events is a four person scramble golf tournament that 210 golfers have signed up to participate in starting at 7:40 a.m. for progressive T-Times at the Quick Sand Golf Course. The Cost per player is $75.00 with two Mulligans allowed.

Prior to this tournament, the P.A.G.A supplied high school counselors with the applications for prospecting graduates to apply. The applications are reviewed by a committee, and the students awarded scholarships are announced at the end of the tournament.

Vic Gutierrez, president of the P.A.G.A in San Angelo, listed some of the criteria being evaluated for applicants that included their overall GPA, extracurricular activities outside of school (like football or band), if they are taking any advanced placement classes, and community service hours served.

The final criteria is based on need, or family income.

The expected number of students being awarded scholarships will be around 25, but that can change depending on the donations received during the tournament, Montelong said.

This is the 34th year the P.A.G.A in San Angelo has hosted the Scholarship Golf Tournament, and a special celebration will be held after the disbursement of scholarships to celebrate the P.A.G.A's 50^th year in San Angelo.

“For an organization in San Angelo to be together for 50 years says a whole lot in itself," Gutierrez said. "The focus of 50 years on scholarships was pretty impressive for an organization known as golfers.”
