Honking Horns at Touch-a-Truck in San Angelo

The Touch-A-Truck Event hosted by the Junior League was back Saturday for its 3rd year. Local law enforcement and businesses brought their utility vehicles to the San Angelo Stadium, and kids of all ages were invited to climb on the trucks, learn about them, and, if they were lucky, they got to honk the horns.

The event was free to the public, and it hosted several activities such as face painting and bubbles for the kids to enjoy. The wide selection of vehicles also ensured that every child had the opportunity to explore their favorite one. There were a couple of crowd favorites.

“A lot of the kids like the fire trucks,” said Elaine Hembree, chairwoman for the JLSA Touch-a-Truck event. “So this year, we have the East Concho Volunteer, Christoval Volunteer and Grape Creek Fire Department.”

The fire trucks were a crowd favorite, and kids everywhere sported their red plastic fireman hats.

“What the kids like the most is the lights and sirens, and getting to squirt the fire hoses,” stated Jared Thomason, public information officer for the Grape Creek Fire Department said. This was the GCFD first year at the Touch-a-Truck and they had a very good turnout at their station.

Another crowd favorite was the Shannon Medical Air Med 1. The helicopter fascinated both kids and adults as they asked the medics how the helicopter worked, especially how fast it could go.

The event gave kids a unique opportunity to interact with the vehicles and the people who use them. They learned about all the things those trucks are capable of and basic safety. And while the kids learned, parents snapped pictures of their kiddos having fun.

The event also had a “horn-free” hour to ensure that those who may be sensitive to the loud noises could enjoy the trucks as well.
