San Angelo's Top Burger Joints

Three days ago, we asked the people of San Angelo to take a burger survey to tell us what their favorite burger place was. The public narrowed the choices down to three known burger joints in San Angelo. They are:

  • Twisted Root Burger Company,
  • Heff’s Burgers, and
  • Lonestar Cheeseburger Company.

The Results

Since posting our poll, 183 readers voted through the survey and 47 people listed their choices under the comment section of the story on our Facebook page. Some choices weren't listed in our survey.

"Zero One Ale house was not on there, but their blanket burger is to die for!" said Patricia Guadalupe Gray.

"Freddy's and Mr T's," said Dorothy Payton.

Despite these added choices, Twisted Root, Heff's and Lonestar topped the list of favorites out of those individuals who voted. Out of the 183 surveys, 49, or 26.78 percent of people voted for Twisted Root; 47, or 25.68 percent of people voted for Heff's; and, 44, or 24.04 percent of people voted for Lonestar Cheeseburger.

The Taste Test

To rate these three companies' burgers, four San Angelo reporters tested a plain and dry bacon cheese burger from each restaurant. Each reporter rated the burger based on freshness, juiciness and taste.

Three reporters chose Lonestar as number one, Twisted Root as a close second, and Heff’s as third. While one reporter chose Twisted Root as number one, Lonestar as second, and Heff’s as third.

Lonestar Cheeseburger Company

Lonestar Cheeseburger Company is located at 333 W Beauregard Ave., and the company's website states, “Lonestar Cheeseburger Company is a cutting edge restaurant on wheels.”

In early 2010, Lonestar parked its wheels in San Angelo at the corner of Abe and Beauregard in the Eskimo Hut parking lot. Since opening, Lonestar has won two awards for its burgers. It was ranked #1 Food Truck Burger in Texas and #4 Best in America Food Truck Burger.

One reporter said, “I chose Lonestar first because I thought that the patty and the bun complimented each other very well. The patty was well seasoned, it had thick crispy bacon, and, all together, it was a great burger.”

Another reporter who chose Lonestar as number one said, “I chose Lonestar first because the patty and bacon had a very bold flavor. The burger would be good even without any other fixings that would go on top.”

Overall, for the three reporters, Lonestar was chosen as number one due to the great combination of a fresh bun and a juicy, flavorful patty with thick, yet crispy bacon.

Twisted Root

[[{"fid":"19711","view_mode":"default","type":"media","attributes":{"alt":"Twisted Root","height":"156","width":"188","class":"media-element file-default imgbody"}}]]

Twisted Root Burger Company has over 16 locations, 14 of them being in Texas. The location in San Angelo is 333 S Chadbourne St. Twisted Root originated in Deep Ellum, Texas in late 2005. This restaurant has won countless awards such as Best Burger Award 2008-2015, Best of Big D (Magazine) 2008 and 2011-2013, and was placed number 15 out of 50 for the 50 Greatest Hamburgers in Texas.

One of the reporters who placed Twisted Root in second said, “Twisted Root was second for me. The cheese is really good, but a little bit overwhelming. Although, the bun to me was a lot better than Lonestar’s bun just because I like sesame seeds.”

The reporter who placed Twisted Root as number one said, “I ended up going with Twisted Root because of the flavor of it. Both Twisted Root and Lonestar had flavor, but Twisted Root won it for me with the combination of the flavor and the cheese. It was very juicy and I liked the seasoning on it.”

For each of the reporters, Twisted Root and Lonestar were neck to neck. Twisted Root finished second due to a choice of preference with the cheese and patty combination.

Heff's Burgers

Heff's

Heff’s Burgers has six Texas locations. In San Angelo, it's located at 2017 N Bryant Blvd. Heff’s has also won many awards. Originating in 2009, in Potosi, Texas, at a convenience store, Heff’s Burgers became a hit.

Starting in 2010, Heff’s Burgers was voted best burger in Abilene until 2014.  Heff’s was featured on an episode of the Texas Bucket List in 2015. On this episode, their Jalapeño Cheddar Burger was said 'to die for.'

One of the reporters stated why he chose Heff’s as last. He said, “Heff’s was in third because I didn’t taste any major flavor in there. The burger patty tasted char broiled which was not appealing to me.”

Another reporter said, “To me, Heff’s patty and bacon couldn’t compare to Lonestar and Twisted Root’s. The other burgers were much more flavorful within the patty itself, and that’s something that Heff’s was missing for me.”

Of course, everyone has their own preferential tastes, so they may disagree or agree.

And no one, it seems, has tasted the cheeseburger at Julio's Burritos, 1911 S. Chadbourne St., 3334 Knickerbocker Rd. or 720 W 29th St.

Thank you for not getting some "educated chefs" to do your testing. Chefs don't know fiddled about how I like my food. Chefs are not objective judges, their personal dislikes always show in their judging. Now, I'll check those burgers for myself and pick my own favorite.

Rant 2! Autocorrect that "corrects" after "save" is selected. The word was diddley! Diddley! Diddley!

All three of these places have excellent burgers! My favorite is Heff's. The sourdough bun is amazing, Twisted Root blue cheese burger is right there too! Congrats to all three of these businesses!!

You excluding Concho Pearl and Zero-One from your survey leaves it way too incomplete. Especially CP has some great ones.
