Despite the early morning chill, the children of San Angelo glowed with excitement as they ran for the Easter eggs spread across Meadowcreek Park during the 27th annual “Bunny in the Park” celebration. This annual Easter event is a way for Scott Allison Real Estate to give back to San Angelo.
“I have been very fortunate. San Angelo has been very good to me, and this is a way to say thank you,” said Scott Allison.
During the hunt, the children, separated by age group with ages 0-3 going first, eagerly ran to collect the eggs. Children, ages 4-6, 7-9 and 10 and up, followed suit. Parents and grandparents watched as the children ran to collect the multi-colored eggs to add to their Easter baskets. Many of the eggs were decorated with their favorite superheroes and classic Easter bunny decorations. Volunteers helped reset the eggs with each age group.
San Angelo Mayor, Dwain Morrison, prior to the start of the race, encouraged the children to have fun.
“It’s just something for our kids; kids are our future,” Morrison said about the free event.
In addition to egg hunting, every child received a free t-shirt, and a few enjoyed having their faces painted while enjoying cookies provided by Cookies by Design. There was also a drawing for a free Easter basket.
With the event being held at one of the many parks maintained by the San Angelo City Council, Morrison said he was happy to see the community gathered together.
“Scott [Allison] is very community minded. He gives back to the community,” Morrison said.
For the parents and grandparents, seeing the kids have a good time was worth spending a bit of time in the cold.
“It’s an honor and a privilege," said Bill Croitz, grandparent of one of the participants. "They’re going to grow out of it real quick so got to get it while you can."
Croitz mentioned how important kids are to this community and how everyone needs to take part in looking after them.
Overall, the race brought many families together, and the Bunny in The Park celebration, for some, is a tradition enjoyed by past and present generations.
