58 Local Food Establishments Receive Expired Health Permit Letters

According to a press release Friday, letters were mailed warning 58 local food establishments with expired health permits they will face closure if they fail to renew their permits by March 13.

The release stated that the City’s health code requires food establishments must hold a valid permit issued by the San Angelo-Tom Green County Health Department. As of Jan. 31, 58 of the 535 locations that held permits last year had allowed their permit to expire. The City is granting the delinquent permit holders a “grace period” until March 13 to renew their permits or face legal action.

A food establishment is a place that sells or serves food to the public, including restaurants, retail food stores, mobile food units and/or roadside food vendors. The ordinance does not distinguish between selling and giving away food, nor whether the establishment is a for-profit venture or non-profit charity. All food establishments are inspected by City health inspectors in accordance with the Texas Food Establishment Rules, as adopted by the City of San Angelo.

All health permits expire Jan. 31. Permit fees are prorated, depending upon when the permit is issued.

Health permits may be obtained in the Health Services Department on the second floor of City Hall, 72 W. College Ave.
