Board Chair Mike Boyd announced the San Angelo Health Foundation has awarded $340,276 to fourteen area non-profit organizations, bringing Foundation commitments to over $2.8 million for the year. Approximately 198 organizations and 613 projects have benefitted from Foundation funding in its twenty years of grant making.
Grants Chair Marilyn Aboussie said the following grants encompass public safety, mental health, rehabilitation and services for the elderly and disabled:
The Arc of San Angelo was awarded $25,000 to assist their guardianship program. The guardianship program has been in existence since 2000. The program recruits, trains and supports community volunteers to be advocates for low-income Intellectual/Developmentally Disabled individuals
Robert Lee Volunteer Fire Department was awarded $20,493 to upgrade their communication systems. Robert Lee Volunteer Fire Department was created in 1947 and covers 750 square miles of western Coke County.
Project Janus was awarded $37,300 for research and resource books for Direct Support Professionals. Project Janus was formed in 2005 with its main focus on researching best practices for individuals with a dual diagnosis of intellectual development disability and mental illness.
Quail Valley Volunteer Fire Department was awarded $45,000 toward a large brush truck, self-contained breathing apparatus and equipment. Quail Valley Volunteer Fire Department is located in the northeast portion of Tom Green County and covers 325 square miles.
Texas Ramp Project was awarded $15,000 to build wheelchair ramps for residents of the Concho Valley. Texas Ramp Project came to the San Angelo area in 2014. Their mission is to build wheelchair ramps for low-income elderly or disabled community members through referrals from social service agencies.
West Texas Boys Ranch – Sonrisas Trails was awarded $80,000 to expand the Sonrisas Trails program which is a therapeutic horse riding program for children and adults with disabilities. 120 children and 35 adults are currently being served.
West Texas Rehab Center was awarded $100,483 for equipment for three departments – the Pacesetters Program, Prosthetics and Orthotics Department and the Audiology Department. The Rehab Center provides services to more than 500 children and adult patient visits per day.
Unsolicited seasonal assistance grants for seven organizations totaling $17,000 were also awarded for Christmas programming needs to: Boys & Girls Club of San Angelo, Concho Valley Home for Girls/Children's Emergency Shelter, Children’s Advocacy Center, House of Faith, MOSAIC San Angelo, Salvation Army and San Angelo State Supported Living Center Volunteer Services Council.
