Annual Street Maintenance Program May Start This Week

The City of San Angelo could begin its annual street maintenance program, which will include the sealcoating of designated streets, as early as Friday Aug. 21, said Anthony Wilson, public information officer for the City in a press release Monday.

Sealcoating includes applying a thin layer of asphalt and rock to a street’s surface, which prevents moisture from seeping into the asphalt and damaging the roadway’s base. This process extends the life of a street’s surface, Wilson explained. Sealcoating represents the first year of an eight-year cycle to maintain every City roadway in San Angelo.

“The City Council awarded a $3.2 million contract to Ronald R. Wagner & Co. of Kendalia, Texas, to perform the sealcoating,” Wilson wrote. “That represents a more than five-fold increase over the $600,000 the City spent on sealcoating in 2012.”

As for the project’s start date, the contractor’s availability will determine that, as well as the weather. Once it does start, however, the work should be completed in approximately three weeks, and officials are asking motorists to avoid parking on affected streets until after construction is complete. The City’s Engineering Services and Street & Bridge divisions conducted an analysis and prioritization of street conditions, which determined the streets chosen for the maintenance program.

“A contracted analysis that involved the use of high-tech equipment to determine the condition of every City-maintained street in San Angelo will be presented to the City Council in the coming weeks,” Wilson said. “That analysis will serve as a guide to determine the best approach to maintaining or to reconstructing each roadway.”
