Many in the community gathered for a benefit for Sgt. Korby Kennedy’s family Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The Elks Lodge hosted the event in order to honor Kennedy’s memory and to help support his family.
Beef and chicken fajitas were served at $10 per plate and all of the proceeds were donated to Sgt. Kennedy’s wife Georgana Kennedy. According to Ken Whitley, member of Elks Lodge, Elks originally hoped to serve 400 plates of food but predicted that about 700-800 would be sold. Whitley called the turnout and support of the community “wonderful.”
Besides the money raised from the food, Chili’s also presented Mrs. Kennedy with a $5,000 check at the event and the Crane Volunteer Fire Department donated $1,000.
Several members of the police department were present, including Police Chief Tim Vasquez, who assisted with cooking along with Cooking for Christ.
“It’s just very humbling to see so many people come together,” Vasquez said.
The benefit was held exactly a month after Kennedy passed away. Norm Fountain, former president of the Elks Lodge in San Angelo, said that the charitable foundation had been organizing the benefit for about three weeks.
“But the glory needs to be given to Officer Kennedy’s family and his memory, not [Elks Lodge],” Whitley said.
