New Technology Soon to Be Offered at Library

Thanks to an Edge Grant through the Texas State Library and Archive Commission, Chromebooks will become available at Stephens Central Library on Monday, June 29. The purpose of the the grant is to make technology more accessible to the public and is an initiative of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Chromebooks are laptop like computers are entirely cloud-based and operate in a kiosk like mode, so nothing is saved to the individual machines, rather, the devices save to your personal Google cloud account. Although the Chromebook cannot print directly to the library printers, files can be e-mailed or saved to a personal Google account then printed from one of the hard-wired PCs.

Those wishing to use a Chromebook must be 18 years or older, will need to have a library card in good standing (no fines accrued), a picture ID, and a free Google account. The check out period will be for two hours and may be renewed if there is not anyone waiting to use a device.
