Laugh With Rain Pryor in San Angelo Friday Night

There’s a thin line between to laugh with and to laugh at. —Richard Pryor

Friday night, March 27 at 9 p.m. at  The Beauregard, 1421 W.Beauregard, you can do both with no offense taken with stand- up comedian, Rain Pryor, daughter of comedic legend Richard Pryor. This will be her first visit to San Angelo and west Texas in general; she will also perform in Monahans the following night. Her debut comedy album drops on Uproar April 7 and is entitled Black & White.

Many remember her father, Richard Pryor, as a racy stand-up comedian who was not afraid to stir the pot in the late 1970s and early 1980s, pushing the envelope delivering one side splitting joke after another.

“I’m sure people don’t know what to expect from me, so it will be interesting,” said Rain Pryor in an exclusive LIVE! interview via telephone. “You never know how the audience will react to your material. Some of the subjects I talk about especially opening my act can be a deal breaker for some. I talk about race and I do characters and I go to the edge, its fun to see people respond to what that is.”

Rain has been a performing artist for a number of years. She is a  NAACP Theatre Award winning actress, two time nominated author for the book Jokes My Father Never Taught Me: Life Love and Loss with Richard Pryor, acclaimed singer and director, producer, and co-host on Arise and Shine on AriseTV  every Saturday and Sunday 8-10 a.m. in New York City, London and Africa. Her new documentary That Daughter’s Crazy won her the best actress award at the Bronze Lenz Film Festival in Atlanta. She has been performing as a stand-up comedian for the past seven years.

“One thing I learned from my Dad is that he was never an insult comic, so I don’t insult people, that’s not my bag. My bag isn’t to put celebrities down or that kind of thing, it’s really about life experience, and that’s the kind of stories that I tell and the jokes that I tell really come from that place.”

Rain is one of six Pryor children. Her oldest brother, Richard Pryor Jr., is a performing artist who has been nominated for New York’s Primer Cabaret Award. Her older sister, Elizabeth is a professor at a college. Younger brother, Franklin, just started performing stand-up comedy himself a few years ago.  Her youngest siblings lead normal lives, Steven sells jewelry and Kelsey is a clothing designer and has her own side business.

“My grandfather on my Mom’s side was Danny Kade’s manager so I grew up in entertainment my entire life, it’s what I know,” she said. “Obviously it’s because of my father, we would go on [movie] sets with him, go to premieres, go on vacations with him and it was such a part of my world, but I’ll tell you once you were home you were kind of all turned off, and I think it’s because we didn’t grow up in the age of the internet so to speak, you didn’t have Twitter and all of that. When you were home you were home, and Dad was just that, Dad.” Rain has a six year old daughter herself, who sometimes goes on tour with her.

Her performance Friday night has Pryor anticipating nothing but a great time. “If the audience comes to laugh, and you leave whatever preconception you have at the door, and you come thinking its okay to laugh, that’s what I’m up there for. I’m up there so people can laugh at what’s not perfect, as long as you know that you are going to have a great time.”

You can purchase tickets to the show at the Pavia in the Cactus Hotel or by calling: (325) 320-4538 or (325) 486-1494.
