The extended local forecast for San Angelo and the region calls for temperatures falling into the 20s overnight with a winter storm warning in effect starting at 6 p.m.
Tonight, San Angelo’s weather will be mostly cloudy, breezy and much colder with sleet and freezing rain.
Freezing rain and sleet accumulations likely across west central Texas, the National Weather states in a winter weather advisory. This winter storm warning remains in effect from 6 p.m. this evening to 6 p.m. CST Monday.
An approaching upper level storm system will combine with a much colder air mass to produce a potential of ice accumulations across the area Sunday night.
By Monday, and perhaps into Monday night, the main area of concern will be along and north of a line between San Angelo to Brownwood.
The weather advisory extends to include the Interstate 20 corridor of Abilene, Sweetwater, and Baird.
Impact: Roads, bridges and overpasses are expected to become icy along the I-20 corridor and areas located north of a line from Mertzon to Eden to Brownwood.
Timing: 6 p.m. Sunday night through 6 p.m. Monday night
Event: Storm total sleet and ice accumulations of up to one half of an inch are possible, especially for areas along and north of I-20.
According to the National Weather Service, a winter storm warning means significant amounts of sleet and ice are expected or occurring. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.
