One Fatality in Structure Fire at Mobile Home

A structure fire erupted at 10:40 p.m. Monday night at the 1000 block of East 22^nd Street. Firefighters in Engines 3, 6 and Ladder 1 responded, along with Rescue 1 and EMS crews in an ambulance.

The 1000 block of E. 22^nd St. is blocked with multiple police and fire responders.

The status of the occupants of the mobile home is unknown. Fire and rescue are searching the area.

Over the radio, the crew from Engine 3 said that a body was found in the debris and called for the battalion chief to come over and inspect.

Unlike other fire scenes in the past, police tape is being deployed to cordon off the area around where the fire occurred.

Update 11:38 p.m.

Fire Marshal Ross Coleman confirmed that a 58-year-old man was killed in the fire. There were two occupants in the home when the fire erupted. One escaped.

Update 12:45 a.m.

The fire was accidental due to clothing that dropped onto a lamp close to the door, according to the initial investigation. Fire Marshal Coleman said the lamp was used both as a heat source and a light.

The fire took off quickly and the deceased occupant didn’t have a chance to make it past the fire blocking the exit.

The other occupant made it out.

The body has been sent to Lubbock for an autopsy.
