High-Speed Chase Ends with Crash Near ASU

Several police units currently surround the intersection of Ave. N and A&M Streets, where a vehicle involved in a high-speed chase has jumped a curb and crashed into the only tree within 40 meters.

Two suspects are reported to have fled the white Nissan Altima on foot after the crash, but appear to have since been apprehended. This has not yet been confirmed by police.

The origin of the chase has not yet been relayed by responding officers.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

Update 6:06 p.m.

Sergeant Cade Solsbery relayed that Officer Ratcliffe had clocked the Altima for speeding in the 2300 block of Arden Road. When Ratcliffe went to make a traffic stop, the driver evaded, running from Arden Road down to Ave N., at one point driving into oncoming traffic.

When the driver, 29-year-old Andrew Cruz, attempted to make the turn onto S. A&M he lost control, crashed into the curb and hit a tree. Cruz then fled on foot to the 2800 block of Colordao St. He then broke into a vacant house on the block and was subsequently taken into custody. At one point he was seen running with a weapon that turned out to be a bb gun that he had ditched in one of the backyards as he fled.

The passenger, 34-year-old Maximino Rosales, exited the vehicle as well, but was promptly taken into custody at the scene of the crash.

Cruz had a few warrants and will be charged with evading in a vehicle and possession of a controlled substance, which field-tested postive for methamphetamine.

Have you ever wondered how many innocent people been killed because of a high speed chase? Many! Why police place the lives of innocent people in jeopardy over a criminal is beyond me! No thief, burglar, druggie, even murderer is worth risking lives of the innocent. There must be other ways to apprehend a criminal.

Well Jo, you can't just say, okay they just broke the law but they won't stop so I guess they can go. Seriously your going to say the police are the ones in the wrong for chasing criminals. So then any driver that wants can say well I'll go 60 mph down Main St if I choose because if the law tries to stop me I can just go faster and they won't chase me. Sounds safer to me.
