Guesthouse of Luxury Lake Nasworthy Home Burns

A guesthouse on the property of a Lake Nasworthy luxury home in the 2000 block of Beaty Road was engulfed in flames Monday afternoon. The 911 call was received at 4:37 p.m., according to SAFD Battalion Chief Fred Barnett.

Barnett said that Engine 2 was in Southland when the 911 for this structure fire was received. Engines 8 and 27 joined it. Barnett said he requested the third pumper fire truck because he was not sure what the availability of fireplugs would be on Beaty Road.

With calls for a “fast attack” against the flaming guesthouse, Engine 2 started to knock down the blaze. Barnett explained that the structure was a living quarters with an attached carport and a greenhouse. The fire seemed to have originated near where the carport is attached to the living quarters, he said. Flames consumed the carport, and some of them leapt into the attic area. Firefighters are concerned about the structural integrity of the carport and will be dismantling it to insure embers are extinguished.

Approximately 300 gallons of water were used to combat the blaze, Barnett said.

The owners of the lake house property do not reside in San Angelo. Barnett said the property’s local caretaker arrived and said no one from the property owner’s family had been to the home in about three months. So, the structure was vacant when it lit up.

Barnett said that the fire marshal is just now beginning the investigation into the cause and said he didn’t have a solid idea of how it started.
