SAFD Responds to Lake View after Bunsen Burner Mishap

A smoking Bunsen burner in a Lake View classroom set off the fire alarm and sprinklers in a portion of a school, resulting in several students being evacuated and a prompt response from the San Angelo Fire Department Thursday afternoon.

It turned out the burner had not caught fire, but the FD showed up to investigate and ensure there was no threat to students' safety.

"San Angelo ISD is always extremely cautious in situations where smoke alarms sounds or in any situation where students's safety is at risk," said SAISD Public Information Officer Jamie Highsmith said. "It's always better to take safety measures in any situation of concern."

Highsmith said that the maintenance department will begin cleaning up the areas affected by water this afternoon so that classes may resume in those rooms. As of yet, she said, potential water damage has not been estimated.
