For the second straight year, the City of San Angelo’s Public Information Office earned two statewide awards – for Best Regular or Recurring Program and Best Media Relations – at the annual conference of the Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers.
The City won third-place Awards of Honor in each category. Austin won the top award for Best Media Relations and the Austin suburb of Cedar Park won first place in Best Regular or Recurring program for cities with less than 100,000 population.
San Angelo’s nominee for Best Regular or Recurring Program was the “Employee Spotlight” series the office produces for SATV, Suddenlink cable channel 17, and for the City’s YouTube channel, youtube.com/CityofSanAngeloTx. The spotlights, each approximately 3-4 minutes long, focus on outstanding public servants throughout the City of San Angelo. The features, produced by Multimedia Coordinator Brian Groves, also air during the interview show “theCITY” on KIDY Fox San Angelo at 9 p.m. Sundays.
“We have one of the state’s smallest public information offices, with a staff of two. So our showing the past two years has been gratifying,” Public Information Officer Anthony Wilson said. “But the chief value of the state conference is learning how we can better communicate to our citizens who we are, what we do and why we do what we do. We look forward to putting those ideas into practice … and, hopefully, winning more awards.”
TAMIO’s awards competition attracted a record 300-plus entries across 27 categories. The winners were announced Friday in Richardson.
An affiliate of the Texas Municipal League, TAMIO provides professional development for public information officers and promotes an active cooperation and an exchange of information and ideas among its membership.
