Fire Department Rescues Kittens

A crisis was averted at 13 W. Beauregard Wednesday afternoon, when the San Angelo Fire Department rescued two black and white patched kittens from the shell of a sign before the San Angelo Ballet (SAB) storefront.

Up to four cats have been residing in the old metal sign, Kelly Monk of the SAB said. This morning she said she noticed the mother cat scamper away and that’s when she saw the two little ones.

Since Monk and the SAB staff noticed the presence of the cats a few weeks ago they’ve been lowering down food and water in a bucket from the roof. Apparently, the cats were meowing this afternoon causing one of the ballet’s neighbors to call the city to rescue the animals.

After a city worker showed up with a ladder and was unable to reach the kittens, the San Angelo Fire Department was called in with a truck.

“We just laddered it,” said Battalion Chief Fred Barnett, who appeared quite happy about having just saved the baby cats. “They give me a hard time because I have a real soft spot for animals, especially cats. We’ve taken them off telephone poles, out of the tops of trees, etc.”

After the fire department brought them down, Tanya Pfluger took custody of the kittens. She intends to take them to a friend in Big Spring who rescues and takes care of kittens, Monk said.

“We’re going to get them healthy enough so that they can go there,” she said.
