A male pedestrian was struck by a gray Toyota 4Runner on South Bryant in front of Pinkie’s Liquor Store.
Six San Angelo police cruisers responded to the 911 call that went out around 11:30 p.m. Saturday night. One the way to the scene, police heard over dispatch that the male pedestrian was not breathing and a civilian was performing CPR.
When we arrived at the scene five minutes later, San Angelo EMS crews had already loaded the injured pedestrian into an ambulance. Two police cars accompanied the ambulance to the Shannon ER with lights and sirens blaring.
Bryant was closed down to one lane as police conducted an investigation. Avenue J is closed at the Bryant intersection.
Blood could be seen on the pavement.
Assisting at the scene was the San Angelo Fire Department.
According to the investigating officer, the pedestrian was crossing Bryant from the Stripes. He almost made it across and was struck in the outside lane. The driver was released from the scene after passing a field sobriety test and giving a statement.
Police are not releasing names until next-of-kin are notified. No updates on the condition of the pedestrian will be available until a name is released.

PermalinkCrime and crash reporting is the most basic form of journalism. It's difficult, requires constant hustle, doesn't pay much, and has the most amount of snake pits ever when compared to boring city council meetings. People want to know why the Loop was blocked off for four hours Sunday morning or why all of the police cars are at the end of their street. We visit 50% more crime and crash scenes than we report. This is particularly true of structure and car fires. Our fire department is so good and fast that we usually get to the scene and there's no story. Some of the crash scenes are not pleasant. We did not report half the gruesome things we see and photograph. This is especially true when there are fatalities. Sometimes the event itself is sensational. The drowning in the Concho River last week is an example of that. We always try to take care and report the facts as we see them or are told by authorities.
