West Texas RSVP and AmeriCorps VISTA celebrate the 2014 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Jan. 20.
This MLK service activity is a statewide effort of the Texas Senior Corps Association which includes West Texas RSVP and also includes two AmeriCorps VISTA members serving locally through the Texas Hunger Initiative.
Its purpose is to offset the losses occurred at the West Texas Elementary School library as a result of the West Fertilizer Company explosion on April 17, 2013.
Senior Corps volunteers were among the first responders after the explosion, and have continued to play a lead role in long-term recovery efforts in West.
According to Texas Senior Corps Association President Walt McFadden, “Senior Corps projects in Texas have supported the MLK Day of Service for many years, but this is the first time that our 54 individual programs have coordinated their efforts for a common beneficiary.”
This represents one of many ways that Senior Corps volunteers are making a difference in Texas communities.”
New or very gently used books, for children K through 5th may be dropped off at Texas RSVP office at 618 S. Chadbourne, San Angelo, by Monday, January 20th.
There will also be a MLK Day of Service event on a local level involving West Texas RSVP’s “Tell Me a Story” program for active military families in the area.
