City Raises $100,000 via United Way Campaign for Local Nonprofits

For the second time ever, the City of San Angelo’s United Way campaign raised more than $100,000 for local nonprofit agencies that provide programs that assist populations ranging from the homeless and economically disadvantaged to neglected children to recovering addicts to schoolchildren.

The City’s employee campaign raised $103,560, which is the most ever raised with the exception of the $104,324 that was raised in 2009. However, that year, the City had 28 more full-time employees than it has today and the San Angelo Federal Credit Union was part of the City’s campaign, contributing $1,480; the credit union now conducts its own campaign.

Of the City’s 959 full-time employees, approximately 45 percent pledged contributions to the United Way, making the City of San Angelo one of the community’s most generous large employers in terms of the percentage of participants and the average contribution.

“While I’m not at all surprised by the generosity of my colleagues, I’m nonetheless overwhelmed by it,” said Civic Events Manager Angelica Pena, co-chair of the City’s campaign. “Most of our donors are not highly paid employees, yet they feel compelled to give what they can because they see the needs within our community. That speaks volumes to the character of our workforce.”

Fellow co-chair Steven Mahaffey, the City’s internal auditor, added, “Everyone who works for the City is a public servant. Those who give to the United Way campaign view their contribution as an extension of the public service they quietly render every day. This is yet another reason to take pride in being a City employee.”
