At last week’s Santa Rita Homeowners’ Association meeting, Rick Weise, the assistant city manager, gave an update on the North Concho River Project.
The project is in Phase II and is to be completed by the end of the month. Work has been done to create new trails along the river and to improve those already existing.
“It’s really going to add some excitement to the river,” Weise said.
A games area was built where the former miniature golf course once was, and the area is now lit up at night. Additional lighting was also put at the bridge on Irving St.
The City of San Angelo also received a National Endowment for the Arts grant, which allowed for more public art along the river. The city partnered with local creatives and the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts to construct pieces for the project.
The total cost of the operation has reached $13.5 million. The improvements have been funded by the half-cent sales tax along with grants the city has received.
To celebrate the completion of the project and highlight the renovated Concho riverfront, San Angelo will host River fest on October 18-19. Events take place along the North Concho River from Oakes Street upriver to 1st Street basically the river downtown.
