Art Thursdays Offer Class in Creativity

Every week the Museum of Fine Art holds free creative classes called  “Art Thursdays” where families can participate in watercolor, clay, and two other artistic activities that change on a weekly basis.

The educational event is held from 3p.m. to 6p.m. in order to serve as a supplementary after-school program.

“This is probably more important than schools realize,” stated Rebekah Coleman, Museum Educator, “it [art] is not just a fun thing, but an educational thing.”

Sharon Glanzer knows the importance of art and makes an effort to bring her four kids every Thursday.

“They get so excited,” she said, “One wall of our house is an art gallery.”

Glanzer’s son has ADHD and the art activities at the Museum of Fine Arts provide an environment where he can be himself.

“He has a place for his energy,” she said, “he has a place he can focus and no one tells him he’s wrong. There’s not a wrong way to do art.”

In times when school systems are pushing STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), fine arts tend to be the first to go.

But as long as families keep participating in Art Thursdays there will always be an option for those wanting art education.
