Bull Rider Knocked Unconscious

SAN ANGELO, TX — A last-minute replacement rider almost paid a heavy price during the 10th Performance of the 91st Annual San Angelo Rodeo. An eerily silent arena looked on as medical personnel rushed to Mateo Nuñez's side to administer medical aid after the Monahans Cowboy was knocked unconscious during his ride.

Luckily for everyone involved, the Cowboy regained consciousness without difficulty and even walked off the arena under his own power, but the scary moment was a good reminder of how much risk these Cowboys actually take for a chance to win it big.

But just like everything else in life, the show must go on. The back-to-back San Angelo Cinch Shoot-Out Champion Josh Frost latched onto "Up the Ante" and scored an 88.0-point ride to take 3rd place overall, moving into the finals on Friday night.

Another group of riders that dominated their rough stock counterparts was the Bareback Riders. Andy Gingerich from South Dakota kicked it into high gear when he scored an 87.5 on the back of "River Bugs." He won $5,803 with that ride in the long go. Even more impressive was the 21-year-old rookie Luke Thrash. He topped the standings with an 88.5, winning himself a spot in the finals and $7,569.

San Angelo LIVE!'s Matt Trammell tracked down Thrash to ask how he felt about his high-flying ride. It's the Bareback Riding, presented by Indeco Industrial Electric.
