X-Treme Bulls, Part 1: Can the Underdog Steal the Show?

SAN ANGELO, TX — After almost two weeks of waiting, fans packed the San Angelo Coliseum to watch Xtreme Bulls on Easter Sunday. 36 riders made up of World Champions and no-name underdogs all received an opportunity to become a champion.

With a family name like Wright, everyone expected a great showing from World Champion Stetson in round one. He climbed on the back of “Hondo,” and Wright delivered with 83 points. His attempt placed him squarely in the Top 10.

Although the crowd knew Stetson Wright, everyone loves an underdog. Stephenville Cowboy Tyler Taylor stole the show and the audience's hearts after he hung on to “Cheddar Biscuit.” The Cowboy made the 8-second buzzer and even stuck the landing. Judges gave him a 79, much to everyone’s dismay, and the crowd made sure to let the judges know how displeased they were with the score.

That 79 put him on the bubble for contention in the finals, but he had to wait for the last flight to finish before he found out his fate. Two riders later, World Champion Sage Kimzey put the pressure on when he took “Crash Cart” for a ride. Kimzey scored an 87 and moved into first place in the competition.

With ten riders left, Taylor waited on bated breath. He needed three riders to fall before Taylor knew he made the cut. The Bulls showed Taylor some love when they bucked off the first four. With that, the underdog made the finals.

San Angelo LIVE!’s Matt Trammell caught Taylor just before the finals began and asked him how he felt about his chances. It’s Xtreme Bull Riding, presented by First Financial Bank.
