World Champion: San Angelo's Traditional Rodeo Makes it the Best in Texas

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Rodeo is full of traditions, and the San Angelo Rodeo does it with the best of them. Traditions filled the Holy Saturday Matinee Performance at the 91st Annual San Angelo Rodeo.

One of everyone’s favorite traditions is the Calf Scramble. The kids wrangled calves today in the hope of winning some prize money. Some of the youngsters wiped out, while others heaved their calves across the finish line. For some of these Calf Scramblers, they would soon find out that things sometimes work better in pairs.

Not every Rodeo tradition is a solo contest. In fact, one of the best traditions at the Rodeo is Team Roping. On Saturday, teams threw for their first round. Dustin Egusquiza and Levi Lord threw for a quick 4.0 seconds. Jaxson Tucker and Wyatt Cox later showed up that time when the two threw for a blazing 3.9 seconds. Their attempt tied them for first place in round one.

The Roping tradition continued in the Tie-Down Roping. Caleb Smidt wrangled his steer in 7.7 seconds to put him in the seventh spot of round two. While 7th place might not be a winning time, Matt Trammell caught up with Smidt after his event, and Smidt explained why San Angelo’s way of tradition makes this rodeo the best in Texas. It’s the Tie-Down Roping, presented by the Clarion Hotel.
