Bulls, Broncos, and Bayou Cowboys

SAN ANGELO, TX — Mean and nasty is the only way to describe the animals on Saturday night during the 3rd performance at the San Angelo Rodeo. Cowboys had a rough time hanging on as the bulls and broncos did their best to toss one cowboy after another.

During the main event, numerous rides resulted in competitors on the floor with an angry bull in hot pursuit. Tom Patrick III even lost his rodeo vest when the bull, “Maverick,” tossed Patrick across the rodeo floor. The Bull Fighters earned their paychecks several times over as they jumped in to rescue the cowboys on several occasions.

Then Trey Kimzey hopped in the chutes atop the bull, “He Reigns,” and the cowboys finally won a matchup. Kimzey latched onto his mount while the bull spun around multiple times. After what seemed like an eternity, “He Reigns” threw Kimzey off as the buzzer sounded. Luckily, the ride counted, and the judges awarded Kimzey with an 81.5. That ride once again proved that Bull Riding eight seconds is the longest eight seconds in sports.

While the bulls won their night, in the Bareback Riding, the Cowboys won the day. No matter how violently the horses kicked, their riders held on. The Cajun Cowboy, Kade Sonnier from Nothern Louisiana used  all the momentum and athleticism he could muster riding the “Knight Mare.” He scored an 83, the best score of the evening.

San Angelo LIVE!’s Matt Trammell tracked down Sonnier after the event to see what it took to hold on to that bronco. Check out the full interview here. It’s the Bareback Riding presented by Indeco Industrial Electric.
