WATCH: Rookie Cowgirl Unphased By Pro Rodeo Debut

SAN ANGELO, TX — It’s finally here. After a year of waiting, the 91st annual San Angelo Rodeo finally began. Fans from around the Concho Valley and beyond packed the Foster Communications Coliseum to see a night filled with first-performance jitters and a grumpy set of rough stock.

After the pyrotechnics in the opening ceremonies, the Cowboys seemed to feel the opening night nerves as several performers failed to post qualifying scores. Whether it was the Steer-Wrestling, the Tie-down, or even the Team Roping, either the Cowboys were off their game, or the steers and calves did not feel like cooperating. Nevertheless, Dakota Eldridge posted the fastest time so far in the Steer-Wrestling, with a time of 3.4 seconds.

Several Cowboys failed to qualify during the tie-down. Calves had uncooperative legs as even if the ropers put the cows on the ground quickly, squirming legs led to many missed ties. In a scary moment, Owen Wahlert’s horse tangled itself in Wahlert’s rope while he was busy with the calf. Several pickup men had to rush over to cut the rope before the horse injured itself.

In Barrel Racing, Rookie Cowgirl Karsen Jackson of Arizona made her pro-rodeo debut. After just recently receiving her PRCA card, she competed with the best the San Angelo Rodeo had to offer to post a 14.57, putting her in a tie for third place. Nicole Love posted the fastest time of the night with 14.27 seconds.
