Attorney Guy Choate Awarded for 40 Years of Service to Rodeo Association

SAN ANGELO, TX — One of San Angelo's respected leaders was honored on Friday night during the Short Go, or Finals, of the 2021 San Angelo Rodeo.

Attorney Guy Choate, one of the partners of the San Angelo law firm of Webb, Stokes, and Sparks, was honored with the Golden Spur award for 40 years of dedicated service to the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo. Choate has provided free legal counsel for all of those years and the protection and advice he provided helped to grow the rodeo, and more importantly, helped jettison the money raised for the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Foundation to be able to provide 170 substantial scholarships for graduates from Texas high schools through its endowment. Recipients of the scholarships must participate as members of 4-H, FFA, or an FCCLA program. The Gold Spur Award is presented annually at the rodeo to a stand-out rodeo volunteer.

Meanwhile, in barrel racing, what a finish it was during the Short Go or Finals of the 2021 San Angelo Rodeo! Carly Taylor got it going with a 14.07 second time. Her time appeared tough to beat until the fastest barrel racer of the rodeo, Dona Kay Rule chimed in with a 14.07 second run of her own. The title seemed it would go to Miss Dona Kay Rule until Wenda Johnson happened. Her 14.09 second time gave her the win of the 3-run average, and the barrel racing championship of the 2021 San Angelo Rodeo.

Her collection of 3 runs of 44.01 seconds clinched her a check for over $8,300 and a barrel racing championship in San Angelo.

After the dust settled we went one-on-one with the lady who gave San Angelo all she had. We have the highlights on video, including Kay Rule's interview, presented by Principal LED. Watch it above.
