What to Look for at the 2021 San Angelo Rodeo's Second Weekend

SAN ANGELO, TX — The first weekend of the 3-weekend San Angelo Rodeo is in the books and fans were not disappointed. The stands were full and the crowds rambunctious as announcer Boyd Polhamus and barrelman Justin Rumford led the action on the dirt. Rodeo took a year off in the middle of 2020 and a new crop of leaders have emerged. Notable during this first weekend is there were only 8 qualified rides through four sets of bull riding — or an average of 2 riders who made it to 8 seconds per performance.

Here’s what it will take to remain competitive starting with the second weekend.

In bull riding, the score to beat is Laramie Mosley’s 89 point ride atop Lancaster & Jones Pro Rodeo’s Final Rainbow from the first performance Friday night.

The time to look for in barrel racing is something less than 15 seconds. But to lead, challengers will need to beat Megan Champion’s 14.28 second run or her 30.24 seconds on two runs.

Will Lummus leads steer wrestling with a 2-run combined time of 9.2 seconds. A challenger will need to get the calf down in less than about 9 seconds to move into the top 12.

In team roping, Clay Tryan/Jake Long, are in the top spot with 8.4 seconds on two runs. That means to lead, a challenger needs to be quick enough to get into the neighborhood of a 4-second time.

Tie-down roper Tuf Cooper leads the 2021 San Angelo Rodeo with a 15.4-second combined time on two runs. To place into the top 12, one needs to get at least a 15-second time but to get into the top third, an 8-second run is needed.

Saddle bronc riding has a tie in the top spot. Cort Scheer, on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s The Darkness, and Isaac Diaz, on Macza Pro Rodeo’s Lucky Cab, both scored 83.5 points. And to get into the top 10, the challenger will need a 78.

In bareback riding, Cole Franks leads with an 88 score. To get into the top 10, a score of 77 or above is required.

The 2021 San Angelo Rodeo continues Thursday with the 5th performance of 12.

The video presented by Dierschke & Dierschke Realtors above is a wrap-up of the 4th performance of 12. We talked to Jay Williamson who nearly broke an arena record of 3.6 seconds with 3.8 seconds in steer wrestling. It was not enough to bring his combined score into the top 12.
