Stock Contractor Pete Carr on the Horses and Bulls at the San Angelo Rodeo
SAN ANGELO, TX — Pete Carr loves animals and that led him into the business he is in— a nationally-recognized stock contractor for rodeos. But prior to that, Carr competed in rodeos as a bareback horse rider, given him a depth of knowledge about rodeo livestock, particularly horses.
Bareback riding is one of the three rough stock events during a traditional rodeo such as the annual San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo.
Since 2004 when he launched the stock contracting business, Carr has had to tend to more than just himself and the horse he drew at a rodeo.
“There’s an enormous number of livestock animals required. I don’t think most people have a grasp of how many it takes,” Carr said.
Horses are like tires, Carr said. Every time you buck one, its like losing a little bit of rubber. A bucking horse may only see one ride for the entire 12-performance-long San Angelo rodeo. Bulls, on the other hand, have more fat on them, and are less, shall we say, fragile than a horse, he said.
“Bulls you can buck more,” he said.
Maintaining a fresh herd of rough stock and livestock at San Angelo’s rodeo is a logistical challenge. Carr said he deploys seven big trucks and trailers. On the Monday after each of the rodeo weekends, those trucks will run back to the Carr ranch in Athens to change out livestock. His stock subcontractors will do the same. In Athens, Carr ranches around 400 horses and 100 bulls.
Quality stock contracting is a labor of love before the money is made.
“It takes a lot of luck. You have to find them (the animals) and then you have to breed them,” Carr said.
Carr is proud to be a part of the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo. “It’s one of the top five rodeos in the world,” he said. “There’s a wonderful tradition here in San Angelo. It’s a cowboy town,” he said
