Legendary Rodeo Announcer Riding Back into San Angelo

SAN ANGELO, TX—It’s springtime in West Texas and almost rodeo season for San Angelo residents. The 92nd Annual San Angelo Rodeo begins on April 5 and lasts three weeks before the finals on April 21. During that time, the staff spends their hard work and time bringing the rodeo to life. One of those names all the people around here know is the voice of the Rodeo, Boyd Polhamus.

Polhamus is part of a select group of Cinch rodeo announcers that work what a recent story written by Cinch Jeans and Shirts Ted Harbin dubbed the “Texas Swing” of winter rodeos. The Texas Swing includes many performances during the first four months of the year in places like Fort Worth, San Antonio, Houston, Austin, and San Angelo. Only Cinch announcers work in these iconic venues, and San Angelo is included in that list. No two rodeos are the same, and Polhamus spoke about his experience in an interview with CInch.

“Last year was my 30th year in Houston,” said Polhamus, a four-time PRCA Announcer of the Year. “This will be my 25th year in San Angelo. It’s really tough to put into words, but it’s like riding two different horses. In Houston, a large part of your audience is not completely rodeo knowledgeable, so you’re going to do a little more teaching to try to help the fan understand the difference between a 68-point ride and a 78-point ride.”

Rodeo tickets will go on sale Monday 03/11/24 at 10:00 a.m. online and at the San Angelo Coliseum Box Office.

Ticket prices vary in value depending on each performance. Also, tickets are for each seat, so any person or child requiring a seat will be required to have a ticket. Tickets for the Mexican Rodeo will be sold separately and are not included in season ticket packages. The Coliseum box office will open Monday 03/11/24 at 10:00 a.m.

Polhamus further complimented San Angeloans later on.

“San Angelo is a very road-knowledgeable place. You could end that rodeo with tie-down roping and start with bull riding, and you wouldn’t lose a soul,” Polhamus said.

Polhamus will end the Texas Swing this year when he returns to the rodeo again this year in April. He is in his 39th year as a rodeo announcer this season. That experience allows him to change between audiences with ease.

“In Houston, I’m doing as much a television broadcast as I am talking live,” Polhamus said. “Everything we do in Houston is to play off the monitor, unless there’s an issue in the arena, then we can look down and see what’s going on in the arena and adjust accordingly. Houston is more of a telecast, whereas San Angelo is more of a traditional type of rodeo.”

One of the important differences that separates the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo from other big rodeos around the state is that traditional flavor. Cowboys and Cowgirls come back to San Angelo every year for that feeling. It’s one of San Angelo’s great traditions and one that Boyd Polhamus continues to highlight.
