SAN ANGELO – The first performance of the storied 91st San Angelo Rodeo is Friday night and from then until the middle of April, San Angelo becomes that thing they call rodeo.
There's no way to really describe in a few short sentences what goes on inside the arena, but Garth Brooks came close in his song Rodeo:
"Well, it's bulls and blood
It's the dust and mud It's the roar of a Sunday crowd It's the white in his knuckles The gold in his buckle He'll win the next go 'round It's boots and chaps It's cowboy hats It's spurs and latigo It's the ropes and the reins And the joy and the pain And they call the thing rodeo"What goes on inside the rodeo arena resonates outside the San Angelo Coliseum to the fairgrounds and all across the city as Saturday begins with the rodeo parade and doesn't end until the beer barn and wine tent shut down around 1 a.m.
