AUSTIN, TX — State Representative Joanne Shofner (R-Nacogdoches) has introduced House Bill 5503, proposing to rename a segment of Interstate 35 in Travis County as “President Donald J. Trump Highway.”
Filed on March 14, 2025, the bill mandates the installation of markers at both ends and at intermediate points along the designated highway section. If enacted, the legislation would take effect on September 1, 2025.
Representative Shofner, who assumed office on January 14, 2025, was endorsed by President Trump during her campaign for Texas House District 11.
Interstate 35, a major north-south route, stretches from Laredo, Texas, to Duluth, Minnesota, and currently holds various designations within Texas, including the Purple Heart Trail and the PanAm Expressway in San Antonio.
Similar initiatives to rename roadways after President Trump have been proposed in states such as Arizona, Missouri, Kentucky, and Florida.
The proposal has elicited mixed reactions from the public. Some social media users have criticized the initiative, with comments highlighting existing challenges associated with I-35.
As of now, House Bill 5503 awaits consideration in the Texas Legislature.
