AUSTIN, TX — Speaker Dustin Burrows announced the committee assignments for the 89th Legislative Session on Thursday, naming Representative Drew Darby as the new chairman of the House Committee on Energy Resources, as well as a member of the House Committees on Administration and State Affairs.
Darby serves House District 72, which includes Tom Green, Coke, Coleman, Concho, Glasscock, Howard, Irion, Reagan, Runnels and Sterling counties.
"I am tremendously grateful to Speaker Burrows for these appointments and honored to serve as chairman of the House Energy Resources Committee," Representative Darby said. "West Texas is crucial to America's energy security and independence. I look forward to advancing policies that support our oil and gas industry while promoting all of the above energy strategies."
The House Committee on Energy Resources oversees a wide range of energy policies in Texas, including alternative energy sources such as nuclear — a key priority for Governor Greg Abbott during this session. Chairman Darby is eager to tackle innovative legislation to maintain Texas' dominant energy status.
"I look forward to working alongside Vice-Chair Eddie Morales and all committee members as we advocate for rural Texas and the millions of people who live, work, and thrive because of the energy industry," Darby stated.
"The Texas House stands ready to address the most pressing issues facing our state, and I have full confidence Chairman Darby’s leadership of the Energy Resources Committee will greatly contribute to the success of the 89th Legislative Session," said Burrows. "Every Texas House committee serves an important role guiding the policies that shape our state and ensuring proper oversight of the legislative process. Chairman Darby is a proven champion of conservative policies that leave a positive impact on the lives of all Texans, and I look forward to our collaboration to deliver another monumental conservative session for Texans."
In addition to his role as Chairman, Rep. Darby will serve on the House Committees on State Affairs and Administration.
The House Committee on State Affairs has broad authority and hears legislation on all matters regarding state policy, including border security, broadband development, and electric transmission, among others.
“I look forward to working alongside the Trump Administration to secure the Texas border once and for all,” Darby said.
The House Committee on State Affairs will also hear legislation regarding the Panhandle and West Texas wildfires, ensuring that our communities remain resilient.
"My priority is ensuring that the families and businesses of the Concho Valley and West Texas are protected. I'm ready to roll up my sleeves and work on passing good bills and stopping bad ones," Darby said.
