PITTSBURGH, PA — More than six weeks after the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, the FBI released new photos Wednesday of the gun it says was used at the rally July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania.
FBI officials also gave new details about the internet searches they’re reporting were made by the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks.
Numerous questions remain from the assassination attempt, including why Secret Service snipers left their post and how someone had the opportunity to climb onto a roof and take numerous shots at Trump, who was hit in the right ear.
One attendee was killed and two others were seriously injured before Crooks was killed.
The FBI said it has still not established a definitive motive for the shooter or identified anyone with advance knowledge of the assassination attempt, according to Kevin Rojek, special agent in charge of the FBI Pittsburgh Field Office.
Rojek said the 20-year-old gunman made more than 60 searches related to both President Joe Biden and Trump before he became “hyper-focused" on Trump's rally in Butler.
It was also confirmed that Crooks was seen walking outside the rally perimeter by a row of vendors about an hour-and-a-half before Trump began speaking.
Video footage from a local business showed Crooks climbing up the American Glass Research building and then traversing multiple rooftops between 6:05 and 6:08.
"Our overall finding is the subject was only on the roof for approximately six minutes prior to the shooting,” Rojek said.
The day of the rally, Crooks flew a drone around the area for 11 minutes, Rojek said.
