Biden to Address Nation on Decision to Drop 2024 Reelection Bid

WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Joe Biden will address the nation from the Oval Office on Wednesday evening regarding his decision to withdraw from the 2024 Democratic presidential race.

The announcement marks the first time the president has been seen publicly since he revealed his decision over the weekend.

Biden posted on X that he would speak at 8 p.m. ET “on what lies ahead” and how he plans to “finish the job for the American people.” The president is scheduled to return to the White House on Tuesday after isolating at his Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, home following a COVID-19 diagnosis last week.

Despite not being seen publicly since July 17, Biden called into a campaign meeting on Monday to address staff and express his support for Vice President Kamala Harris’ bid to succeed him, a day after announcing his departure from the race.

A letter from Dr. Kevin O’Connor, the president’s physician, dated July 23, 2024, stated that Biden’s COVID-19 symptoms have resolved.

“The President’s symptoms have resolved," the letter read. "Over the course of his infection, he never manifested a fever, and his vital signs remained normal, to include pulse oximetry. His lungs remained clear. BINAX rapid antigen testing is negative. He will continue to be monitored for any recurrence of illness. The President continues to perform all of his presidential duties."
