Darby Highlights Clubhouse's Role in Mental Health: ‘This is Not a Handout; It's a Hand Up’

SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo Clubhouse is taking part in the National Clubhouse Week of Action from May 28 through May 31 to end Mental Health Awareness Month.

San Angelo Clubhouse, 404 S. Irving St, is one of 354 Clubhouses around the world.

Information states that the Clubhouse operates on a community-based approach to supporting adults living with mental illness.

Throughout the week, San Angelo Clubhouse hosted a series of events designed to engage, educate, and inspire community members.

Yesterday's event featured State Representative Drew Darby, who spoke about the importance of Clubhouses and mental health. Several San Angelo Clubhouse members shared how the Clubhouse model has transformed their lives.

In his speech, Rep. Darby emphasized the significance of the Clubhouse's work, saying, "Some folks in our community need a little help. This is not a place for medication but for acquiring skills, life training, and workforce skills. The program does powerful work with very limited resources, and securing adequate support has been a challenge."

Darby highlighted the legislative hurdles and the need for greater understanding and support from state leaders.

"We have people in the legislative process who just don't get it," he said. "They look at the big picture and dollars but don't understand the basic human needs at the local level."

He also discussed recent legislative efforts, including Senate Bill grants for mental health services, expressing frustration over the slow approval and funding process.

Darby concluded by praising the Clubhouse's mission and encouraging continued support.

"This is not a handout; it's a hand up," he said. "The Clubhouse is a launching pad for its members to become meaningful parts of our community. We provide the skills necessary to live and compete in our community."
