AUSTIN, Texas — Governor Greg Abbott has proclaimed April 2024 as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month in Texas, urging all Texans to unite in raising awareness, preventing sexual violence, and honoring the bravery of survivors.
"Texas stands with survivors of sexual assault and will work to bring justice and support for victims of this heinous crime," stated Governor Abbott. "Survivors who share their experiences deserve our gratitude, as do law enforcement officials, the judicial system, and advocacy organizations."
Abbott emphasized the importance of collective action in combating sexual assault, encouraging all Texans to join in the ongoing fight to prevent sexual violence. By advocating for survivors and increasing public awareness, he believes society can create a safer environment for all.
Rose Luna, CEO of the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault, praised the resilience of survivors and highlighted the crucial role of the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Task Force (SASTF) in supporting survivors and driving systemic improvements.
Established in 2019, the SASTF is dedicated to delivering a survivor-centered, trauma-informed response to sexual violence experienced by adults and children across the state. The task force brings together professionals and survivors committed to enhancing support systems for Texas sexual assault survivors.
Texans are encouraged to show their support for survivors throughout April by using the hashtag #TXSexualAssaultAwarenessMonth on social media. Governor Abbott reiterated the state's commitment to healing and empowering survivors of sexual violence.
