Tom Green County District Clerk Resigns

SAN ANGELO, TX – The District Clerk of Tom Green County is resigning effective May 1, 2024.

According to the agenda for the Tom Green Co. Commissioners Court posted by law Friday afternoon, Anthony Monico is resigning effective May 1, 2024.

Tom Green County Judge Lane Carter said Friday that Monico was resigning before his term expired for personal reasons. Monico confirmed his resignation this afternoon. He added that at Tuesday's Commissioners' Court meeting, he will make a short statement concerning his resignation and express gratitude to the county, employees, and voters. He said he requested that his last day be May 1, 2024.

Anthony Monico was appointed District Clerk in February 2020 to replace longtime District Clerk Sheri Woodfin; He was elected to the office in November 2022. District Clerks serve four-year terms.

Judge Carter said the Court is researching state law to determine what happens next. Under state law, a special election typically replaces county elected officials who resign with more than 18 months left on their terms. If less than 18 months remain on the four-year term, the office may be filled by appointment.

The District Judges can appoint district Clerks. There are four District Courts and, therefore, four District Judges in the Tom Green County Courthouse.

Tom Green County Commissioners usually appoint individuals to fill vacant elected offices other than district offices, including district clerks. The court meets on Tuesday, March 26, at 8:30 a.m. in the Commissioners Court Meeting room on the second floor of the Keyes building downtown. That meeting is open to the public.
