Police Chief Candidates Discuss Their Platforms at San Angelo Tea Party Forum

SAN ANGELO, TX — The race to become San Angelo's next Police Chief saw its candidates, Travis Griffith, Mike Hernandez, and Chris Cimino, presenting their platforms at the Tea Party Candidate Forum on Tuesday, March 13. The event allowed each candidate five minutes for introductions, followed by a Q&A session with audience members.

Chris Cimino took a straightforward approach, emphasizing his background in law enforcement over politics. He notably stated his aim was not to solicit votes but to enlighten the electorate on policing nuances within the San Angelo Police Department.

Travis Griffith aimed to win over the crowd with a blend of charisma and vision for uniting the community through effective policing. He underscored the importance of bolstering the department's recruitment efforts.

Mike Hernandez highlighted his extensive experience, spanning nearly three decades, and addressed concerns about his age indirectly. In his 50s, Hernandez, a former U.S. Marine, also made a point to adjust the U.S. and state flags to their proper positions before his speech, showcasing his attention to detail and respect for protocol.

The candidates shared their perspectives on marijuana decriminalization, a timely issue given Lubbock's upcoming ballot referendum. Hernandez, drawing from personal experience, voiced opposition to legalization, suggesting marijuana could be a gateway to more dangerous substances. Cimino pointed out the challenges of enforcing marijuana laws, especially with the advent of vaping pens that complicate THC content assessment. Griffith proposed educational interventions over punitive measures for students caught with THC-laden vape pens, advocating for partnerships with local drug awareness organizations.

Griffith also floated the idea of a "citizens advisory board" to foster a closer relationship between the police department and the community, a proposal met with skepticism regarding its necessity and durability. He defended the concept as a modern approach to community policing, distinct from the current chief's strategies.

Hernandez questioned the need for such an advisory board, suggesting the San Angelo City Council already fulfills this role. Cimino, on the other hand, praised the current chief's open-door policy as effective community engagement, but didn't dismiss the potential value of an advisory council representing diverse community segments.

With the election scheduled for May 4, 2024, the last day for voter registration is April 4, with early voting running from April 22 to April 30. San Angelo LIVE! will host a Police Chief Candidate Debate on March 18, 2024, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Sugg Community Room of the Stephens Central Library, open to the public.
