ODESSA, Texas — Congressman August Pfluger not only participated in the town hall meeting at the Bush Convention Center on Monday but also took the opportunity to tour the West Texas Food Bank (WTFB) in Odessa.
During the visit, WTFB showcased its facility to Congressman Pfluger, offering him an inside look at their ongoing construction projects aimed at expanding the building's capacity. This expansion is crucial for accommodating more food and serving additional families in the Permian Basin.
Congressman Pfluger expressed optimism about the potential impact of this expansion in addressing food insecurity issues that may have previously gone unnoticed. He highlighted the significance of considering the cost of living in rural areas, emphasizing that expenses in these regions can often surpass those in urban areas.
"People don't think about the cost of living in rural areas, but in fact, the price of everything can be a lot more expensive than it can be in urban areas," Congressman Pfluger noted. "So when you've got the economic activity that we have with the oil and gas industry, but also being in a rural area, then those problems tend to compound. Think about kids that are going hungry, and I have a soft spot in my heart for that issue."
The funding for the majority of the expansion project comes from private funds and donations, reflecting the community's commitment to addressing food insecurity challenges in the region.
