SAN ANGELO, TX — Travis Griffith who is running for police chief in a three-way contest with City Election Day looming on May 4, 2024, has a shot at forcing a runoff with presumed frontrunner Mike Hernandez. Long shot candidate Christopher Cimino has work to do. These are the observations of an informal survey of our subscribers to the LIVE! Daily Email Newspaper.
In all, 310 unique respondents participated in the voluntary poll that was sent to 16,300 subscribers. The poll was emailed Thursday morning at 9 a.m. and we tablulated the responses as of 11 a.m. Friday morning.
Here are the results:
Candidate | Votes | Percent |
---|---|---|
Mike Hernandez | 158 | 50.97% |
Travis Griffith | 115 | 37.10% |
Chris Cimino | 19 | 6.19% |
Unsure/No Selection | 18 | 5.81% |
Griffith said these types of surveys are easy to manipulate. However, “It is One small measuring stick in grand scheme of things.”
Hernandez indicated that the campaign has barely started. The May 4 City Election is over two months away and the looming March 5 Primary Election has taken most of the oxygen out of the electorate. The amount of spending on advertising for PACs aligned with Gov. Greg Abbott that are attempting to unseat incumbent State Rep. Drew Darby consumes all the talk on the street.
Hernandez expressed confidence that his campaign will prevail in convincing voters to elect him police chief.
To win the May 4 election without a runoff, the leading candidate must attract 50% of the vote plus one more. The survey shows Griffith is within 1% of doing just that. It is too early to tell at this stage, but the survey provides an early benchmark of where the campaigns are at this point.
