Sen. Charles Perry Votes to Acquit Attorney General Ken Paxton All 16 Times

AUSTIN, TX — State Senator Charles Perry voted to acquit Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on all 16 articles of impeachment brought to it by the Texas House. The Texas Senate held a trial in its chamber over the past 12 days where Houston attorney Tony Buzbee led the defense. Buzbee’s central argument was that the House did not provide enough evidence to convict.

During the closing arguments, Rep. Andrew Murr, R-Junction led the House managers in the prosecution. “He has betrayed us and the people of Texas, and if he is given the opportunity he will continue to abuse the power given to him,” Murr argued.

The charges arose from Paxton’s close relationship with real estate investor Nate Paul. The House managers argued that Paxton used the office of the Attorney General to conduct obstruction of legal opponents of Paul in exchange for free renovations on Paxton’s Austin home and for hiring Paxton’s mistress so she was more accessible to the attorney general in Austin.

Buzbee made fun of the House prosecutors’ lack of evidence, declaring in closing arguments that the House’s entire case was built upon “maybes.” He distilled the House case by calling it “foolishness.”

“All of this foolishness that they’ve accused this man of is false,” said Buzbee. “The question I have in my mind is whether there is … courage in this room to vote the way you know the evidence requires. I think there is. I hope there is. I pray there is.”

Here is an example of Buzbee’s work in the Senate Chambers:

Buzbee tied the impeachment of Paxton to the desires of the Bush Dynasty in Texas to grab back power. During the oral arguments, Buzbee showed evidence that George P. Bush had renewed his law license on the day Paxton’s lieutenants went to the FBI to allege Paxton was breaking the law. Mr. Bush lost to Paxton in a runoff in the 2022 Republican Primary. The suggestion was that should Paxton be removed from office, George P. Bush was ready to assume command of the AG office should Gov. Greg Abbott appoint him.

Earlier during the trial, Buzbee tore up an ADA from the Travis County DA’s office. He showed that even though the ADA thought unlawfulness was happening at Paxton’s AG office, he had applied for a job with the AG.

When Buzbee mentioned that House Speaker Made Phelan was drunk, this was in the incident he was referring:
