Darby to Chair House Redistricting Committee

AUSTIN, TX - Representative Drew Darby (San Angelo) was selected by Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan to serve as chairman of the pivotal House Committee on Redistricting for the 88th Legislative Session.

The House Committee on Redistricting serves a pivotable role in determining who your next representatives will be. Its decisions will also place Darby on the front lines of the continuous battle between Republicans and Democrats over alleged gerrymandering to retain the majority Republican power.

The committee has 15 members, with jurisdiction over all matters pertaining to:

  • legislative districts, both house and senate, and any changes or amendments;
  • congressional districts, their creation, and any changes or amendments;
  • establishing districts for the election of judicial officers or of governing bodies or representatives of political subdivisions or state agencies as required by law; and
  • preparations for the redistricting process.

In addition, Darby was appointed as a member of the House Committee on Criminal Jurisprudence and the House Committee on Energy Resources.

“I am grateful to Speaker Phelan for appointing me to serve on these essential committees and for the opportunity to chair House Redistricting,” said Representative Darby. “I am eager to continue serving as a voice for the Concho Valley and West Texas on energy related issues that are vital to the Texas economy. Moreover, I look forward to ensuring that we have a criminal justice system that is fair, just, and equal through my service on Criminal Jurisprudence,” Darby said.

As a returning member to the House Committee on Energy Resources, Representative Darby will play a key role in issues related to oil and gas, pipelines, geothermal, hydrogen, and carbon capture among other energy issues.

“I thank Speaker Phelan for these appointments, and I am ready to work alongside my colleagues for the benefit of Texas,” said Darby.

Darby serves House District 72, which includes Coke, Coleman, Concho, Glasscock, Howard, Irion, Reagan, Runnels, Sterling, and Tom Green counties.
