U.S. Senate Confirms Ketanji Brown Jackson to Supreme Court

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The United States Senate has confirmed Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the United States Supreme Court.

The Senate voted 53-47 in favor to appoint Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court filling Associate Justice Stephen Breyer’s seat when he retires this summer.

Brown Jackson is the first black woman to serve on the US Supreme Court in its 233-year history. President Joe Biden named Brown Jackson as a nominee on February 25, 2022, saying, “For too long our government, our courts, haven’t looked like America. I believe it’s time that we have a court that reflects the full talents and greatness of our nation.”

President Joe Biden made it a point to nominate a black woman for the Supreme Court.

Ketanji Brown Jackson came under fire from Republican Senators as her sentencing record on child pornography cases were below recommendations.

Senator Ted Cruz said, “In every single child pornography case that she heard, Judge Jackson sentenced the defendant below the sentencing guidelines.”

The White House defended Brown Jackson saying that the Republican Senators voted for Trump-nominated judged who sentenced defendants for similar crimes the same way.

During the confirmation hearing, Senator Marsha Blackburn asked Ketanji Brown Jackson, “Can you provide the definition for the word ‘woman?’” to which Brown Jackson said, “I’m not a biologist.”

Brown Jackson has served on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia and has experience as the Vice Chair and Commissioner on the U.S. Sentencing Commission as a federal public defender, a lawyer, and a law clerk and all levels of the Judiciary.
